In the novel Nothing But the Truth by Avi, the character Phillip Malloy has a problem. He cannot run track for the school because he is ineligible. He is blaming his English teacher Miss Narwin for his poor grade in her class. Instead of doing the right thing by trying to improve his grade, Phillip shows his frustration in inappropriate ways. After humming during the National Anthem in homeroom, Phillip is sent to the principal's office by Miss Narwin. When the principal threatens to suspend Phillip, Phillip refuses to help his situation by apologizing to Miss Narwin. He leads his family to believe that she is the problem instead of taking responsibility for his own actions.
